Inspired by the world-famous staircase in Rio de Janeiro, the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps boast a colorful mosaic that will enliven the area for San Francisco. Inspired by the world-famous steps in Rio de Janeiro, artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher did not start working on the beautiful neighborhood masterpiece–running up the risers of the 163 steps– until January 2003.ħ5,000 fragments of tile, mirror and stained glass…Ī total of 163 separate mosaic panels created, That’s quite the workout, but, well worth the climb. I’ve walked up those stairs many times over the years when I lived on 16th Avenue (between Ulloa and Vicente) from 1984 to 1995.
